Top fruit exporter Kees Oskam:

“Sales impulse needed to bring top fruit season to successful ending”

The top fruit export is quite difficult at the moment. “Prices remain at a level we have had to deal with for six or seven weeks already. We have much competition from Belgium in the pear trade, which I feel is pushing export ahead somewhat, and the apple export is very limited. We export the pears to our traditional destinations, Germany, Poland and Scandinavia, and for apples we can mention no peaks at all,” says Kees Oskam.

“Prices for Conference pears are between 45 and 60 cents, depending on size. Lukassen pears are sold at 40-50 cents. Elstar prices vary between 30 and 80 cents, depending on quality and type of storage. Cox apples are, disappointingly, already off the market, and Jonagold does not have much trade either. Wellant apples are sold at prices between 55 and 60 cents. Kanzi apples and red pears will undoubtedly be more profitable, but they only have a limited share of the market,” Oskam continues.

“All in all, we start the new year with plenty of challenges. We are going to have to get some import impulses from somewhere, in order to offload our fruit. Additionally, not all of the fruit will stay good until the end of the season. We are definitely going to try to bring the season to a successful ending, but quite a few things will have to happen for that. Fortunately, some doors are opening now, so that is one worry less,” Oskam concludes.
