The City Council of La Frontera, in coordination with the Cabildo Insular, has got the licence for the construction of two greenhouses in the municipality that will give continuity to the project for the regeneration and modernization of tropical pineapple cultivation in the island of El Hierro; an initiative within the framework of the 2014/2020 rural development plan for the Canary Islands, in which the project's financial resources are established.
The Mayor, Pedro Miguel Ángel Acosta Padrón, wished to outline the interest of this action for the municipality and for the producers who devote their work to the growing of pineapples. "This licence ensures the continuity of this project, so important for the crop and for the families that depend on it," he explains.
"The license will also prevent the loss of the budget that the Government of the Canary Islands had allocated to this end this year, all thanks to the inter-administrative cooperation with the Cabildo Insular, which is providing the lands for the facilities and infrastructure, as well as the human resources and support during the execution of the regeneration project.
The goal of the program is to improve the plant material of the most common pineapple variety in the Archipelago: the Spanish red, and of the procedures used until now, in order to respond to market requirements and prevent a loss of demand for this product.
The program will be divided into several projects aimed at the setting up of a greenhouse for the rooting, hardening and maintenance of mother plants, as well as for the multiplication of tropical pineapples with the selection, characterization, evaluation and multiplication of the plant material.
