Diets improving for American youth

While still far from ideal, nutrition for children in the US is improving. After an analysis of over 38,000 children's diets from the years 1992 and 2012, it was shown that disparities remain by income, race, and receipt of food assistance from the government.

Over the study period the researchers noticed an increase in the consumption of healthy foods such as whole fruit and became more likely to avoid sugary drinks like soda which offer no real nutritional value.

“Although we showed that several areas still need to be improved … our paper provides evidence that we are on the correct track,” Gu adds. Gu is optimistic that if current trends persist healthy diets among American youths can only increase.
