It took seven years for Japan to sign a free trade deal with Australia, paving the way for duty-free or preferential access for goods into the country, reports abc.net.au.
The FTA has made products like nuts even more appealing to the fastidious Japanese consumer, according to Austrade's Tokyo trade commissioner David Lawson.
"There's almost no native nut market in Japan," he said.
"So, as they see the health benefits of nuts and, as they see tariffs drop on Australian nuts, we've seen a real surge in the types of nuts available on shelves in Japan."
