Farmers like Fred Franklin have their work cut out for them gathering hundreds of pounds of pecans and getting them ready for the holiday season. "I've got 400 pounds of pecans dried that I need to crack and shell and box, doing it all by myself it takes some time," says Franklin.
He says it's been a rough year for pecan farmers; last year he didn't sell any pecans, but this year he's expecting to sell around a thousand pounds. Franklin says it's because of the weeks of rainfall we saw in August.
"That made a difference, if that it hadn't been for that I wouldn't of had any pecans worth selling."
Each year he says he never knows what he's going to get, saying it all depends on how much rain we get. But, the pecans give him plenty to do in retirement.
