Denizli, southwestern Turkey, now contributes 15% of the country’s total pomegranate production as a result of a government project where growers were offered certified saplings. Hamdi Gemici, chairman of Denizli Chamber of Commerce, states that the surface area dedicated to the “Hicaz” pomegranate has reached 2,200 ha in centre Denizli “we expect to yield 30,000 tons this year despite having lost an area of 300 ha due to frost”.
According to Denizli, the region’s microclimate results in a high quality pomegranate, which is very much sought after by Russia, Europe and Iraq. The harvest season will continue till the end of October with growers expecting 1.120TL per kilo for their produce.
