Cyprus' agricultural sector recorded a drop in gross output by 8.2% in 2014 compared to 2013, new data from the the Cyprus Statistical Service shows. According to the “Agricultural Statistics” report, the drop is attributed mainly to a lower volume of crop production in cereals (85.8%), green fodder for hay-making (92.0%) and straw (73.8%), due to unfavourable weather conditions, especially water scarcity.
Exports of agricultural products fell by 17.3% in value terms reaching €97.7 million in 2014. This drop is attributed mainly to the decrease in the value of exports of citrus fruits and potatoes.
Income from citrus exports fell to €19.7 million in 2014 and to €42.8 million from potato exports.
Total gross output of the broad agricultural sector in 2014 fell by 4.9% at current prices and reached €666.1 million compared to €700.8 in 2013.
The sector's value added at current market prices dropped to €289.0 million in 2014, while in real terms value added remained at the same levels as in 2013 going up marginally by 0.1%.
