Quickened ripening
He continues: “It is expected that the later varieties will ripen this week, quickened by the warm weather. The storage varieties still have to grow, but they will not have much room. The root system is not developed far enough. The roots did not have to ‘search’ for water when they were planted, but when the ground dries up the roots will die. This is a problem in the parts of Belgium that had a lot of rain in June.”
Shortage of waxy potatoes
The prices are relatively normal, according to Bart. “The prices are mostly determined by the industry and many contracts have already been secured. Later, when all of the harvest is stored and the volumes have been determined, then the prices will be set. It is remarkable, however, that there is a shortage of waxy potatoes. The Charlotte variety is very expensive at the moment. I expect that the shortage is only temporary, there will be more harvest, of course.”
Consumer is more aware
The producer and retailer states that the sales in Belgium are perfectly fine. “We notice an increased demand for local products. Retailers demand Belgian potatoes and the consumer is more aware and focusses on Belgian potatoes while shopping in the supermarkets. Other national products sell very well.”
