Russia burns Belgian pears

On Wednesday 4 May, 808 kg of pears imported from Belgium were destroyed by the Russian Agricultural Supervision Agency in Krasodar.

The Agency's specialists had reportedly discovered the lot at a wholesale warehouse near Krasnodar.

The owners of the pears were not able to present "the shipping and phytosanitary documents."

The whole lot was destroyed "by means of burning in a furnace at a specialized enterprise."

In response to the Western sanctions, Russia introduced a food embargo in August 2014. Since then, imports of fruits from a number of countries, including the EU, has been banned.
