China: strong Sichuan cherries season expected
“We grow cherries on 70 hectares in Sichuan province in the Southwest of China. The first cherries of the season will be ready for harvest by the middle of May. 80% of our crop we sell on the domestic market through online sales channels and to wholesole markets. The remaining 20% we export to Europe. Sichuan cherries are sweeter than Yantai cherries, and they are bigger. Yantai cherries are known as ‘American cherries’ in China, because it is a similar variety. Sihuan cherries are a domestic cherry variety. Our orchards are located 1,500 tot 2,600 meters above sea level in altitude, soil and temperature conditions that favour cherry trees,” says Miss Li Ya.
“The popularity of cherries is growing in China. Cherries have become a popular gift, which has increased the price of the crop. We also expect a higher yield than last year because spring weather conditions have been favourable. The local government of our province has announces that it wants to boost agriculture and the fresh produce industry. We have received support from the government last year, which we expect will continue this year. The increased production volume we want to use to increase our market share in China and to export more.”
