Italy: Campania leading strawberry producer region

With a turnover of over €100 million and 600,000 MPUs (man power units), Campania is the leading region in the strawberry producing sector.

The Sabrina variety is the most popular one and constitutes 50% of the entire production.

Thanks to variety diversification, cultivation covers the entire territory - produce from Sicily and Calabria is available from January until March, whereas that from Campania and Basilicata are ready in April/May and overlaps with produce from the North (Verona and Emilia Romagna).

In 2012, strawberries were cultivated on 3700 hectares (-20% than in 2000), 40% of which were in the North (Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Trentino and Piedmont) and 60% in the South.

For what concerns Europe, Spain holds the leading position with 6,800 ha, while Italy holds the second place.
