US (FL): Shelled English peas a specialty item

“Shelled English peas are a specialty item for us. We only sell them peeled and packaged”, says Charlie Eagle with Southern Specialties. The company has incorporated shelled English peas as an extension of their 'Southern Selects' microwaveable specialty products.

“English peas, available in frozen form or canned, have been a consumer favorite for years”, said Eagle. “We recognized the demand for a fresh, flavorful, healthful and convenient product and have introduced the microwaveable peas.” The typical consumer of this specialty item makes his/her dinner choice shortly before going to the grocery store or while being at the grocery store. “The peas are a consumer favorite for people who are looking for convenience.

Microwaveable Southern Selects shelled English peas, in 8 ounce bags, are most popular with singles and small households”, added Eagle. A one-pound Southern Selects bag is popular with larger households and for holidays and dinner parties. Shelled English peas from Southern Specialties are available at select retailers throughout the United States.

Guatemala
“Our English peas are only grown in Guatemala and are harvested and shelled by hand”, said Eagle. “It took some time to learn how to handle and package the product, but the growing conditions in Guatemala are ideal. The country has some rich volcanic soils and ideal micro climates. Additionally, it has the labor force necessary to hand-harvest and shell the peas.” Southern Specialties has been growing and importing from Guatemala for 25 years. From Guatemala, the packaged product is distributed to Florida, a short three-day trip.
