UK one of Swazican’s largest export market

Despite the country’s elimination from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), the United Kingdom is reportedly one of the Swaziland Fruit Canners’ largest export markets, supplying over a third of that country’s canned grapefruit products.
Swaziland Fruit Canners, affectionately known as Swazican, is the leading producer of processed pineapple and citrus products and a major earner of foreign exchange for the country.

The company is reportedly an important valued-added industry which utilises locally -produced fruit and sugar according to the country’s business year book 2014.
The book mentions that Swazican is one of the largest employers in the country with an average of 500 people employed throughout the year and up to 3,000 during the peak season.

Swazicans’ other export markets are Germany, Spain, Italy and Japan to mention only a few.

This industry has kept up with innovation in agro-processing technology and in recent years has invested a state-of-the-art equipment to produce a range of packaged fruit snacks and deserts to diversify its product portfolio outside that of traditional canned products.

Moreover, the book mentioned that there was a strong focus on social accountability and the company has been recognised for its achievements in promoting a number of employee wellness initiatives.

“Swazican forms part of the Rhodes Food Group whose head office is in South Africa. This operation includes a vegetable canner, a meat cannery, two ready-made meals plants, a pie and pastry operation, a dairy and stud farm,” the book reads in part.
