Angola: Farm to harvest over 3,000 tons of watermelon

More than 3,000 tons of watermelon is the amount to be harvested in current agricultural season (2014) on the farm Oshietekela, in southern Cunene province.

According to the farm owner, Jose Charles Dawis, besides watermelon, the farm is harvesting sour potatoes and vegetables, such as cabbage, carrots, onions and tomatoes, which are afterwards sold in Ondjiva, Xangongo and the provinces of Huila, Benguela and Luanda.

He stated that the farm is benefiting from funding by the Development Bank of Angola (BDA), in order to support increased agricultural production in order to reduce dependence on agricultural products from the neighbouring Republic of Namibia.

Charles Dawis said after the watermelon harvest will be seeded large quantities of maize and beans through the central irrigation system.

With 130 hectares and 70 workers, Oshietekela Farm is located in the village of Calueque, Ombadja district, 180 kilometres southwest of ondjiva.
