Poland: 20% of organic products fail to meet legal requirements

An audit carried out by Poland's Trade Inspection revealed that 22% of organic products do not meet certain requirements. Entrepreneurs found to have marketed such products will have to pay fines of up to 10% of their total revenue. The value of this market in Poland is estimated at more than 700 million Złoty (165 mln Euro)

According to the report of the Trade Inspection, of the 219 batches where issues were detected, 19% presented an incorrect labelling, while more than 15% were of unacceptable quality.

Dariusz Łomowski, deputy director of the Department of Trade Inspection in the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, stresses that the proper labelling of all organic products in the EU must include a green leaf made of twelve stars, the name of the certification body, which is the entity that verifies whether a particular food product is actually organic, and information on whether the goods come from the European Union or another area.
