NZ: Claims kiwifruit tariffs unfair

The government seems to be asleep at the wheel when it comes to ensuring a level playing field for kiwifruit exports, says Rachel Jones, Labour Party candidate for Tauranga.

David Cunliffe, Bay of Plenty candidate Clare Wilson and Dr Jones talked with Zespri and New Zealand Kiwifruit Grower representatives in Tauranga this week.

“While thrilled to hear how well the industry has recovered since PSA, we were surprised to learn that they are paying a 45 per cent tariff on fruit going in to South Korea.

“This is especially galling when a rival grower like Chile is not paying any tariff at all. Clearly someone needs to be negotiating harder for a fairer deal for New Zealand growers.

“Labour will be working hard to break down these kinds of barriers,” says Dr Jones. “Our focus on regional development means we will be supporting local businesses to do what they do best.

“Kiwifruit makes an enormous contribution to the regional economy and is one of New Zealand's primary produce success stories. Labour wants to make sure it stays that way.”
