Over the past month, six potato batches shipped from Morocco to St. Petersburg, a total of 500 tonnes, have been blocked and sent back after pale cyst nematode was found in them.
"Pale cyst nematode is one of the most dangerous crop pests and it is not present in the Russian Federation," reported the regional management of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance of Russia.
The pest can affect all potato varieties, as well as some tomatoes and aubergines.
