"Rob Kuijper: "Warm weather good for melon consumption"

Price of Costa Rican melons significantly higher than last year.

The first yellow melons and watermelons from Costa Rica arrived a little bit late at importer Herman Kuijper BV in Amstelveen this year. Rob Kuijper talks of a reasonably good market. "With our suppliers we have agreed on the same program as the previous season. After two mediocre seasons, we did not find it the right time to expand the volumes, but prices are now considerably higher than last year."

"Supply is going slowly. In the future there will be more volumes coming in. The demand from different countries is good. Among others, Germany, Scandinavia, France and Italy are currently among our clientèle. Relatively high temperatures are obviously good for melon consumption and the quality is very good," said the importer. The melon season at Herman Kuijper traditionally runs until the end of April / beginning of May.

Rob expects that the price of melons will stabilize. "There is some commercial merchandise available from Panama, Honduras and Senegal and there are also some Brazilian melons on the market here and there, but it has added no pressure on the prices yet. In previous years you would have experienced hindrance from opportunist importers who had access to huge volumes during poor market conditions putting a strain on the market even more, but fortunately this has not happened yet so far."
