France: First deliveries of Guadeloupe melons have arrived

After a winter break, the melon market should redeploy and expand, seeing arrivals from the Antilles.

The first deliveries arrived from Guadeloupe at the end of January whilst the first arrivals from Martinique are expected in February. The season appears to start under good auspices, climate conditions up to now have been favourable. The offer should now rise rapidly to fulfil potential end of March/ beginning of April.

The traders hope to certify PGI 1,600 t of the 2,000- 2,200 t of produce shipped annually (1,300 t certified in 2013). The process, officially recognised by the European Commission in March 2012, concerns 23 producers and a potential 1,800 t.

This year also marks 30 years since the first melons from Guadeloupe were marketed in France. Shipment, with the tonnage from Martinique as well, should remain stable and reach at least 3,500 t. The Guadeloupe melon can be found at the Agricultural Salon in Paris from the 22nd February-2nd March.
