Japan: Pentagon-shaped oranges

Everything can be achieved with just a bit of imagination. This is what some Japanese farmers must have thought when they decided to grow pentagon-shaped oranges.

Iyokan is the second most-popular citrus fruit cultivated in Japan after "unshÅ« mikan". It is currently mainly produced in the Ehime prefecture.

The skin is bright and shiny. It seems thick but it can be peeled by hand. The flesh has a strong aroma, it is slightly more bitter than oranges, but sweeter than grapefruit.

Pentagon-shaped oranges represent a good luck charm and have therefore become really popular, so much so that they are called "Gokaku non Iyokan", which means "sweet scent of exam success".

In fact, in the city of Yawatahama (Ehime prefecture), Yyokan oranges were given to students as a good luck charm for their admission tests.
