NZ-Taiwan pact bodes well for kiwifruit trade
Consumers can expect price cuts on items such as kiwifruit and cherries as a result of lower tariffs and administrative costs under the Agreement between New Zealand and the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu on Economic Cooperation (ANZTEC), the ministry said.
What has been given the most attention is kiwifruit, since over 90 percent of that fruit imported into Taiwan comes from New Zealand, the Council of Agriculture said.
Taiwan imported roughly US$86 million-worth of refrigerated fruit from New Zealand last year, of which 73 percent was kiwifruit, according to council figures.
With the signing of the pact, Taiwan will cut tariffs on the fruit by 20 percent to zero over three years, which could translate to a drop of NT$3 (US$0.09) per kilogram in the price paid by consumers, the council said.
