Taiwan: Dragon fruit packaging design winners announced
Chiu Yi-lin of Kuen Shan Senior High School in Tainan won the top prize and NT$80,000 (US$2,665) for her design inspired by a pagoda in the Great Buddha Scenic Area in the county's Bagua Mountain.
The contest, held from April 17 to May 17, drew 257 entries from 304 contestants nationwide. A total of six designs were selected by design specialists and an online vote.
Changhua topped all cities and counties in Taiwan in terms of the area and volume of dragon fruits harvested in 2011, according to the Agriculture and Food Agency.
In 2011, the county harvested 158.33 hectares of dragon fruits, or 22 percent of the country's total, producing 2,832 metric tons of the fruits, or 20 percent of the country's total, according to data from the agency.
Changhua Magistrate Cho Po-yuan, who presided over the award ceremony, said he hoped the finely designed packaging will help promote the brand of locally produced dragon fruits.
Japan is the main overseas market for the county's dragon fruits, Cho said.
Praising the quality of the county's dragon fruits, Cho said they pass Japan's stringent pesticide residue checks and quarantine standards every year and are popular among Japanese customers.
