Hungary: Government seeks to protect melon industry from imports

The Rural Development Ministry in Hungary is planning talks aimed at encouraging national retailers to support the country's melon growers and protect them from low cost imports. This has been announced by Rural Development Ministry State Secretary. Gyula Budai.

Last year the government arranged for a minimum price of HUF 99 per kilogramme (while the wholesale price for imports was HUF 60). This prompted an investigation by the competition office GVH but it was abandoned after the government legislated to make agricultural pricing probes – even those already in progress – subject to ministerial approval.
