Turkish peppers with five times the maximum residue level allowed were seized

Once again, Bulgaria confiscated a batch of peppers from Turkey that had an excess of residue levels, as was informed to Hortoinfo by the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).

After carrying out the relevant analysis, the Bulgarian authorities found that the peppers contained 0.567 mg/kg of carbendazim, when the maximum residue levels (MRLs) established for this pesticide in peppers is of 0.1 mg/kg, thus exceeding the allowed limit by 5.6 times.

The quick action of the Bulgarian border services, that proceeded to destroy the goods, has prevented the peppers from being distributed in any market.

Carbendazim is a rapid penetration, broad spectrum, systemic fungicide from the benzimidasole group, with a preventive and curative effect.

It can cause eye and skin irritation. If ingested in large amounts, it causes choking, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
