15 days to go for greenhouse melons in Sicily

"The production of melons in Licata started in early April with big quantities, and I think there are now around 15 days to go. The main varieties are Mundial and Proteo, which are cultivated in greenhouses. From a quality and commercial point of view, the production was satisfying with respect to last year's, though yields weren't as good," explains Giuseppe Cammilleri, partner of Alba Agricola, a small local cooperative.

"This year, the sugar level and the organoleptic qualities are better. Production wasn't as abundant because of southern winds during setting. As regards sales, generally the price was good and there were no weeks with too much produce. Prices dropped only in the last 10-12 days because of rainy weather and lower temperatures especially in the North, which affected sales."

As regards competition, Giuseppe says that Morocco, as usual, only affects the beginning of production, as it is the end of their season. "The other true competitors are Italian, especially from the Battipaglia and Mantova area, as they too have had problems with the weather and therefore had to deal with delays."

Once the melon season is over, the vegetable production cycle of the area will be over too. "We will re-organise in August for early autumn produce," concludes Giuseppe.
