Italy: Finally a positive strawberry market

"The strawberry season started really late and with bad weather both in our production area and in our markets, keeping consumption to a minimum. On the contrary, Spain benefited from good weather conditions in May," explains Alberto Garbuglia (in the photo), general manager for APO Scaligera.

"Even if volumes are smaller, production in the Verona area is lasting longer than usual, and the market is finally positive. Our strawberries grown on the Lessini Mountains are also late and the first fruits should be ready between 12th-15th June, right after the production in the plain."

"In general, the Spring season showed how the quality of a product is its main asset. Fruits cultivated according to the breeding programme in collaboration with Forlì's CRA, as for example the Garda variety (in the photo below), have a superior quality. In the next few years, the varieties produced by APO Scaligera will change and strawberries that are better, tastier and with a longer shelf-life will be available on the market."
