Rens Allewelt, Fruitpoint:

"No dip in the pineapple market yet this year"

The sales of pineapples is doing well in the cold weather this Spring. "The Spanish Summer fruit season has not yet fully started, and this is benefiting the sales of pineapple," says Rens Allewelt of Fruitpoint, subsidiary and representative of Banacol and Venecia in Europe. "More pineapple was expected than is actually coming in right now."

The price of the pineapple is at around 8.50 Euro at the moment, and this will rise a little next week. "This is usually the period in which the pineapple sales are a little pressured, but we've not really had a dip so far this year," says Rens. "Until week 28/29 there won't be huge volumes. So I feel quite confident that we'll get through the Summer just fine."

Banacol grows its own pineapple in Costa Rice on an area of over 4,000 ha. of the variety Gold. Fruitpoint sells this to a wide audience in Europe, which ranges from supermarkets to wholesalers. According to Rens, the sales of cut pineapple are also increasing, but are always sold next to fresh pineapples.
