NZ: Weather interrupts kiwifruit harvest

The kiwifruit harvest in Bay of Plenty and Motueka/Nelson has been interrupted by the weather.

Country Life reports a number of pack houses in Bay of Plenty are only at the half way point, when normally about 80% of the crop would be picked.

Growers were waiting for the fruit to size up, but they can't pick because of the rain.

Very little kiwifruit harvesting took this week in Motueka/Nelson because of the damp conditions.

Only a few more dry days are needed now to get the remainder of the Green variety off, while the Gold variety is already in the packhouse.

Country Life reports overall quality is not good as expected as wind damage has caused bruising on the fruit, but volumes are good.
