Mexico: Protected Designation of Origin for Colima's limes
Producers and authorities support the proposal of obtaining a Protected Designation of Origin for the limes from the state of Colima because of the special degree of acidity that they have, as well as their high shelf life durability and bright green colour.
The initiative was presented to the Chamber of Deputies by the federal legislator from the PAN (National Action Party) and native to Colima, Patricia Lugo Barriga, who in an interview proposed urging the Ministry of Economy so that he follows the corresponding procedures.
"That they take the necessary steps so that, diligently, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property initiates the procedure for the issuance of the declaration of protection of the lemon cultivated throughout the state of Colima via the Protected Designation of Origin," she said.
Lugo stated that the application is properly supported, arguing that Colima is the primary producer of this species, to the extent that Tecoman, with the largest area of acreage this crop, is identified as the lime capital of the world.
"The Designation of Origin is given to a product from a specific region, whose quality and characteristics are a result only of the geographical environment it was grown in, comprising in it the natural and human factors," she said.
In that sense, she considered that the lime produced in Colima acquires characteristics that make it unique, "such as their special degree of acidity, higher shelf life durability, and bright green colour."
In addition, the specific methods employed by the farmers from Colima in their production, give it an international prestige, which is why their limes can be found in virtually all of the national markets and are also exported to the United States, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Canada and Japan," she said.
