Portugal: Frosts destroy 60% of Douro Sul's apple production

The president of the Association of Fruit Producers of Beira Távora, Humberto Matos, estimates that over 60% of Douro Sul's apple production has been lost as a result of the frosts that took place last weekend.

"The weather forecast had announced colder nights, but I never expected such low temperatures," said Humberto Matos, mentioning that a minimum temperature of -4.4 degrees Celsius was reached.

According to Matos, the intense cold weather lasted "for two hours, causing a terrible and unusual damage on apple flowers, destroying their tissues and reproductive organs.

"It was a disaster which very rarely happens with such severe consequences," he stated, explaining that a similar situation took place in the region 20 years ago.
