Tesco smoothies contain 3 of 5 a day

The first ever commercially available smoothie containing three of your recommended daily five fruit and vegetable portions has been launched by Tesco.

The 3 Of Your 5-A-Day range comes in three flavours: green contains apple, banana, cucumber and pea; orange contains pineapple, carrot, banana and mango; and yellow contains grape, apple, pumpkin and peach.

The smoothies, which have been created to appeal to people who struggle to eat enough fruit and vegetables, are intended not as a substitute for fruit and vegetables but as a top-up for those who feel they could do with a health boost.

The drinks - which each will contain one 330ml portion of fruit juice, vegetable puree and fruit puree - also aim to encourage younger children to eat their fruit and vegetables.

Tesco drinks buyer Andrew MacLauchlan said: "Despite our best intentions it can sometimes be hard to remember to get your daily five-a-day but these delicious smoothies will make it easier than ever before to stay healthy.

"We believe these drinks will be popular with the growing number of people who now eat meals on-the-go as well as with youngsters who generally love smoothies but sometimes can hold off from actually eating enough raw fruit and vegetables.

"Mixed fruit and vegetable smoothies have become popular over the last 10 years in trendy juice bars, but at an average of £2.50 for a medium-sized drink their price is a lot of money for many people."

The drinks achieve three of the five recommended servings by combining 150ml of juice with an 80g of fruit puree and 80g of a vegetable puree in each serving.

A major benefit is that the different fruits and vegetables offer a variety of nutrients in one drink - especially fibre which isn't found in fruit juice alone.

The smoothies cost £2.49 per one litre bottle.
