Currently there is a particular shortage of Royal Gala apples from Chile. "This has really become a basic apple, with a permanent place on the shelves,” says Korpel. "An overseas Royal Gala is rather difficult to replace by another imported bi-color apple in the same period."
Shifting trade flows are likely to increase even more in the coming years. Korpel expects changes in the export of apples, but also of other fruits from Chile and various South American countries. "High cost prices, and high rates paid by other continents are to blame." Regarding the current season for Chilean apples he expects lower volumes, which will be sold at a higher average prices than accustomed to in the past.
