Tanzanian scientists develop high yielding papaya

Tanzanian scientists have improved a papaya plant variety. Molecular plant virologist Joseph Ndunguru of the Mikocheni Agricultural Institute, made the announcement at a workshop organised by Bioscience for Farming in Africa. Existing varieties yield fruits only from one-fourth of planted stock, he said, whereas the new variety sees crop from all plants.

“The improved variety of papaya plants has been made possible at our modern laboratory,” he said.

The new variety means less land will be used for producing the same yields and costs will also be reduced.

Recently, President Jakaya Kikwete challenged scientists to conduct studies to establish technology to enable the government to act in support of horticultural industry.
