EFC: First harvest of new pear variety in 2016

"Belgium: "With the P2829 we can go to further-away export markets"

EFC have selected a new pear variety which will enter the marker in three year's time. The name is P2829 and is a cross between Conference and Doyenne d'Hiver. The approver is the French institute INRA. Ilse Hayen, director of European Fruit Cooperation mentions, that P2829 was officially presented this year at the Fruit Logistica. "The reactions were enthusiastic. Our idea of going to further-away export markets was well received. The first limited harvest will be in 2016 and after that volumes will increase all the time."

To further-away export markets
Ilse mentions that 5,000 trees will be planted in the Spring of 2013. "Next season 50,000 trees will be planted and the following season 200,000. Because of the better display life of the pear we can go to further-away export markets. The name is still P2829, but together with the owner of the variety, we are looking for a new name for the pear."

"The most important advantages for the grower compared to Conference are: a better distribution of sizes, a higher average weight, a good fruit placing, no negative influence of GA3 at the number of flower bases and size of the fruit and a stronger growth. In addition the new pear has a smooth and thick skin, but is not very sensitive to sorting and grating damage. The most important advantage for the grower is that he has fewer expenses. This is because he hardly needs any thinning out and picking with stem is easier. P2829 is not sensitive to bacteria and there are no problems with scabies."

Of course it's not only the grower who profits from the new variety. The consumer and the trade benefit from P2829. "The pear is sweeter than the Conference. Also the peel is smooth and the product is more durable compared to the Conference. The green colour remains for longer and that is a big advantage for the export."

European Fruit Co-operation (EFC) was started as a cooperative arrangement between three growers organisations, namely Veiling Haspengouw from Belgium, Koninklijke FruitmastersGroep from the Netherlands and WOG (Württembergische Obstgenossenschaft) Raiffeisen e.g. from southern Germany. This group represents about 1,500 fruit growers and an annual turnover of 310 million Euro.
