Guatemala: Focused on perfecting horticulture

Earlier this month Popoyán and Priva opened a Training/Research Center called CCIPPP (Centro de Capacitación Innovación y Producción Popoyan-Priva). This is the first tropical center of its kind in Latin America. It is estimated that CCIPPP will be training more than 2000 growers from the region in the next two years. This is an initiative between the Dutch company Priva, the Guatemalan company Popoyan and the Dutch Government with the Private Sector Investment Program (PSI)

Popoyan has, during the last 20 years, been a catalyst of change and of an innovative platform that has been able to achieve a very positive impact in the horticulture industry of Guatemala and Latin America generally. Following the Popoyan philosophy of working very close with its clients and helping them to achieve the success, Popoyan knows exactly the points to improve within horticulture. Research is going to be focused in the sustainable development of the agricultural industry and increasing production.

CCIPPP is divided into three lines; Research and Innovation, as well as Trainning and Production. These three lines are going to measure the economical impact, the environmental impact and the social impact of each activity performed in the three lines of CCIPPP.

According to Francisco Viteri General Manager of Popoyan, this Center was designed in order to develop and test the latest technologies in horticulture, and at the same time, ensure their suitability for use in a tropical environment. Once the technology has been developed the plan is to make sure it made available to the industry.

CCIPPP has been welcomed by the growers of Guatemala and the region, many of whom have already signed up for courses. The same is true of representative of the government of Guatemala.

For the opening on the 8th of March, the Secretary of Agriculture Elmer Lopez, the Secretary of Work and Social Development Carlos Contreras and the Secretary of Economy Sergio de La Torre attended to the act, and the three agreed that CCIPPP is one of the tools for the sustainable development of Guatemala. Today, the products of Guatemala is focused on sustainability, quality, flavor and fair trade.
