US: Domestic Goldens and Fujis from Oneonta tasty alternative to imports

Representing a genuine bargain to consumers and a reliable focal point for retailers, Golden Delicious and Fuji apples from Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers in Wenatchee, WA, are in good supply this spring.

According to Scott Marboe, marketing director for OSRG, Goldens and Fujis are seeing steady movement despite the presence of imported fruit in the marketplace.

“Consumers know and trust our Starr Ranch brand apples. In today’s economy, the discerning shopper is looking not only for a bargain, which we offer with our domestic product, but also a proven source of vitamins and minerals. Continued studies on apples are showing them to be nutritional powerhouses, and we know consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables help in the fight against obesity and diabetes,” Marboe said.

“We are offering excellent quality and a good range of sizes in both varieties,” he said. “The versatility of the sweet, firm apples makes each perfect for out-of-hand eating, and they both also lend themselves to cooking. That’s important as more and more Americans are returning to the kitchen and home-prepared meals.”

The Fuji, with its sweet and crunchy bite and a fragrant, juicy flesh, stores well and holds its quality. Consumers favor it for snacking and have discovered its flavorful addition to fresh salsa or an otherwise ordinary bowl of oatmeal.

“I just returned from a trip visiting accounts in Asia. I ate some locally produced Fuji and then had one of ours. The taste, the density of the apple and the pressure of our Washington-grown Starr Ranch apples were exceptional,” Marboe said.

A longstanding go-to apple, the Golden is firm, and its sweet white flesh lies just beneath a thin skin. It’s a great snacking apple, but foodies also prefer it in backing and for making applesauce.

“Spring is sometimes considered ‘import season,’ but we want buyers to know our Washington-grown fruit is still abundant,” Marboe said. “And to those who are feeling deprived in the wake of certain food ‘bans’ in other parts of the country, we want you to know our apples satisfy that sweet tooth.”
