Brazil's apple production will decrease this year
The Brazilian Association of Apple Producers (ABPM) reported that apple harvests in Brazil would drop by 11% this year. According to estimates by the entity, weather events such as droughts and frosts will decrease the amount and size of the fruit.
Moreover, the eradication of plantations in some regions of Santa Catarina (Brazil) also contributes to the reduction. According to the Association harvests are expected to amount to 1.05 million tons this year, 11% less than last year, when they reached 1.18 million tons. In Rio Grande do Sul, according to the Gaucho Apple Producers Association (Agapomi), the reduction will be 6.83%, from a volume of 483,000 tonnes last year to 450,000 tonnes this harvest. "A late frost occurred during flowering, drought associated with November and December, caused the number of fall fruits which also contributed to reduce its size," says Leandro Bortoluz president Agapomi.
