US (FL): Strawberries left unpicked in labor shortage

A labour shortage is causing strawberry growers to leave fruit in the fields unpicked in Hillsborough County.

The shortage is brought about by strict immigration controls, growers stated at the annual Florida Berry Expo at Florida's Gulf Coast Research Center.

The growers were already struggling after last season saw an increase in Mexican production that found its way on to the US market, pushing down prices.

"It's not a level playing field," said UF economist Zhengfei Guan, who attended the expo. "We are going to see a lot of industry consolidation."

Recent reports show that 30% of the state's berry growers are planning to downsize over the next few years.

Growers are working on ways to adapt to the changing market. They've hired lobbyists to work with the federal government towards the creation of an Ag card, that would allow immigrants to come in for the purpose of harvesting.

They are also looking to utilise more mechanical harvesting techniques.

Researchers are also looking for better ways to combat pests and freezing temperatures.
