NZ: Pip fruit protecting wasps released
The pest cost the New Zealand pipfruit industry $35 million after Taiwan closed its borders to apple exports in 2006, after a single moth larvae was discovered.
Plant and Food Research scientist John Charles says they're testing for how well the Mastrus wasp establishes itself in Hawke's Bay because it's one of New Zealand's main apple exporting regions.
Mr Charles says countries that don't have problems with coddling moth don't want to import apples if there's any risk of contamination.
