Netherlands: Start of import season Costa Rican melons at Herman Kuijper

Last week Herman Kuijper received the first yellow melons and water melons from Costa Rica. "We have started a week earlier than last season. The volumes aren’t too high yet, but all in all, we expect to import a similar volume as last year," says Rob Kuijper.

All melons are marketed in Europe under Kuijper’s own brand 'Caribe'. The season runs until the end of April. "With the Fruit Logistica last week, carnival this week and spring break next week, sales are a bit messy, but I expect them to go up pretty soon," says Rob.

Last year the melon season was a dramatic affair and according to the importer, this season might just pose another challenge. "Because of the dollar and the increased freight rates, we need to generate about 25% more to even match last year. Fortunately, we started with better prices this year."

"Also because Easter is early, I expect a positive effect on the demand for melons. The coldest period is now earlier than last year. Then we had a general drop in temperature in mid-March, greatly affecting demands. Obviously we cannot predict the temperatures in March, but I hope that things will clear up soon. My expectations for this season are therefore positive and hopeful," concludes Rob.
