Peru: Second in number of certified organic producers

In Latin America, Peru comes second in terms of number of certified organic producers (350), behind Brazil (2,755) and followed by Mexico (145), Uruguay (66), Costa Rica (37) and Chile (16), according to a study presented by Promperu based on the latest statistics from the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). 

The study also gave details about the worldwide market for organic products by country, with the list led by the United States with 30% of the total, followed by the Netherlands (17%), Germany (16%), Belgium (11%), Sweden (6%), Canada (5%), United Kingdom (4%), Italy (3%), Japan (2%) and France (1%); among others (5%).

Likewise, it gave details about the distribution for this type of crops, showing Oceania as number one with 33%, followed by Europe (27%), Latin America (23%), North America (7%), Asia (7%) and Africa (3%).

Regarding the number of hectares per product, organic bananas led the list with 45%, followed by avocados (18%), mangoes (14%), figs (5%), papayas (2%), raisins (2%) and pineapples (1%); among others (13%).

It is worth noting that bananas are the world's main organic product with 85.9 million hectares, followed by avocados with 34.8 million hectares, mangoes with 26.1 million hectares; among others.
