Zambia: West poised for cashew nut production

Western Province is poised to become the hub of cashew nuts production in the next few years, provincial permanent secretary Bert Mushala has said. Mr Mushala said government has already given the Cashew nut Growers Association a grant of K100 million for the importation of 30,000 cashew nut seedlings from Mozambique. He said the 30,000 seedlings have already been brought in the country. Mr Mushala was speaking in an interview here on Thursday. “We are trying to re-energise the cashew nuts. It’s a profitable business,” he said.

Mr Mushala said the association also accessed K2 billion from the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission. He said Western Province is suitable for cashew nut production but that the industry collapsed due to lack of investment in the sector. “I appeal to the local people to work hard and revamp cashew nut production because it is a viable project,” he said.
