India: Mildew hitting grapes hard

Grapes in the state of Maharashtra are being hit hard by downy mildew. The disease is spreading well as a result of recent humidity and rainfall.

Farmers have responded to previous occurrences by pruning vines earlier. Thus year the pruning had just ended when the majority of cases occurred.

According to Ashok Shivtare a farmer from Sangli, "Once we advanced pruning, the flowering and fruit bearing schedule also get advanced.

"There was no good rain during the first half of the monsoon season and we had given up hope. Many of us watered our grapes by ordering water tankers. We were expecting clear weather during the flowering period, but the recent rain spoiled our plans."
