Spain: Organic strawberries, a quality product
The strawberry plantation of the Portola variety, set up in April in an area of 1,200 square metres on a farm in Cangas de OnĂs, Spain, is starting to bear fruit.
It is said that the quality is "excellent" and the flavour "unbeatable." This is achieved with perseverance and by putting customers' desires first. It is easy to see, as this organic orchard is full of colour from the strawberries, standing out from all the green that surrounds them. The most important thing, which makes the owners most proud, is that they are available in shops just a day after being harvested, without undergoing refrigeration. From the very beginning they knew they wanted to make a product "from Asturias for Asturias."
From June to November, around 300 kilos of strawberries are harvested every day during harvest days, which are Mondays and Thursdays, so every Tuesday and Friday customers can buy a truly fresh and high quality product.
The strawberry season does not last long in the area, but the mild summer and autumn weather in Asturias makes it an ideal product in terms of environmental sustainability.
