India: Doctors condemn smuggled GM apples

Bihar state police in Araria have seized 3,000kg of genetically modified apples, thought too have been smuggled into India from Nepal on small pick up vans and carts.

Indian doctors have been quick to declare the fruit unfit for human consumption. Dr S N Jha of Kishanganj Medical College, said, "Good apples improve the immunity system and help in reducing the cholesterol. They also kill bacteria thereby preventing the tooth from decaying. On the other hand, the GM apples do not have any such properties."

Another noted orthopaedic Dr K S Anand too advocated against consumption of GM apples, saying, "these fruits will ensure visit to a doctor, instead of keeping them away."
