India: Karnataka hort plan to cut out middlemen

The department of horticulture has implemented the Comprehensive Horticulture Development Plan in the district of Mysore.

The plan is hoped to encourage growth of the fruit and vegetable sector in the region.

According to deputy director H M Nagaraj, the department is at present in the process of setting up farmer's associations. Amongst the crops that are being primarily focused on are, in Varuna, watermelons and, in Doora, mangoes.

Under the CHDP the horticulture department will provide information and technical assistance to the newly formed farmer's associations.

Assistant horticulture officer (AHO) Chetan said that the new associations would increase the bargaining power of farmers and enable them to cut out the middlemen.
