AU: Apple growers gets low price for juice fruit

Prices paid to southern NSW apple growers for their juice fruit have plummeted in recent months.

Orchards in the Riverina Highlands were hit by a number of hailstorms this season, which led to an oversupply of fruit for the juice market.

Grower Barney Hyams says the price drop is much bigger than what he'd typically see after harvest.

"Look, unfortunately we've seen the price paid for juice fruit drop quite considerably from where it was at the end of last year, which was sitting at $400 a tonne, which in fact were prices we haven't seen since 1984," he said.

"At the moment, prices are sitting at around $200 a tonne, so we're seeing prices for juice fruit have approximately halved since the commencement of harvest."
