India: Nashik grape exports up 20% this year

Export of table grapes from Nashik has increased 20% this year, reaching 18,000 tonnes and expected to reach 24,000 tonnes by the end of the month.

"Around 1,500 containers from Nashik district had been exported by April 7 and it is expected to reach up to 2,000 containers by April end. In the last grape season 2011 (Jan-April), around 1,250 containers (15,000 tonnes) were exported from the district," a senior agriculture officer said.

He said that the destinations for the grapes included the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden, Germany and Denmark.

Maharashtra contributes 90% of the nation's total grape export, 75% of which are cultivated in Nashik.

The district's grape exports are rising every year. In the last nine years, Nashik's grape exports have increased seven-fold from 3,775.37 tonnes in 2002 to 35,671 tonnes in 2010.

However in 2011, exports sharply declined by 58% to 15,000 metric tonnes following unseasonal rains which adversely affected the district's vineyards.
