Malta: Figs and Pistachios destroyed due to carcinogenic mould

3,510kg of dried figs had to be destroyed last month after they were found to contain an excessive amount of aflatoxin – a toxic, carcinogenic mould that can also lead to liver failure.

Similarly high levels of the toxin were found in a consignment of pistachio nuts, which were also destroyed.

Theses foods were amongst a total of 9,334.17kg of food that were destroyed last month for food safety reasons.
