Germany: Bio, regional and fair trade products are the trend
In the German foodstuff branch the trend of organic products grows further. The market volume of organic products has doubled since 2002. The annual turnover of this segment is approximately 6 billion Euro. This development is mainly the result of retailers having increased their assortment with organic products, amongst which are organic products of their own brand. The market share of retailers in the organic segment amounts to more than 50%.
Simultaneously more and more consumers are seeking regionally produced products. This development is being strengthened by the shops: 80% of the fresh products offered come from German production. German consumers also attach more and more value to social and ecologically responsible consumption. In all of Germany in many supermarkets and discounters fair trade products are offered also. Fair trade products could be anything from candles to jerseys and from wine or flowers to jewellery. In all of Germany 33,000 shops and 800 world shops offer about 10,000 different fair trade articles for sale. With all this the market share of fair trade products is still below 2%, but the growth during the last few years is nevertheless striking and is expected to increase even further.
